Future Technology Development and Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Course Description:
This course introduces innovation and entrepreneurship in China, highlighting the important issues of innovation and entrepreneurship, the close integration of theory and practice, and the characteristics and requirements of the Chinese scenario. The main contents include: (1) the great achievements, great challenges and features of the international and domestic environment of innovation and entrepreneurship in China (including the achievements and characteristics of the world’s leading generation of Chinese entrepreneurs); (2) the knowledge system and key contents of innovation I (including the meaning of innovation, the misconceptions and basic conditions); (3) the knowledge system and key contents of innovation II (including planned and unplanned innovation; learning by trying and the problem of opportunism); (4) the important contents and models of entrepreneurship (including the main arguments and important models of entrepreneurship); (5) the cases of innovation and entrepreneurship of state-owned enterprises (including the great achievements of innovation and entrepreneurship of state-owned enterprises, why many people have significant misconceptions about the innovation and entrepreneurship. (6) Innovation and entrepreneurship of private enterprises (including the advantages and disadvantages of innovation and entrepreneurship of private enterprises); (7) Innovation, entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship spirit (including the essence and misunderstanding of entrepreneurship spirit); (8) Innovation, entrepreneurship and national policies (including the importance and misunderstanding of policies).

Faculty Profile:
Xudong Gao: He is currently a professor at Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management, a researcher and deputy director of Tsinghua University Technology Innovation Research Center, a member of the Information and Communication Economy Expert Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the vice president of the China Society of Industrial Economics. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, a Master’s degree in Economics from Renmin University of China, and a PhD in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
His research interests include telecommunications, automotive, energy (including new energy), and the competitiveness and innovation of large central enterprises. The main research directions are corporate strategy, technology strategy and technology ability cultivation.The theories and countermeasures of Chinese enterprises’ competitive strategies and independent innovation capabilities have been systematically studied, and the questions of why, whether and how Chinese enterprises should carry out independent innovation have been analyzed. In particular, based on the systematic study of Chinese local enterprises represented by CNPC, Sinopec, State Grid, CGN, Goldwind, Longi, Tsinghua Sunshine, Datang Telecom, ZTE, Huawei, Guoshuang, XCMG, Yuanda, Huada Gene, Dawning, Hisense, Changhong, TCL, etc.He proposed the “Social Learning Theory”, “Later Disadvantage” theory, and “Co-Growth Theory” for local enterprises’ innovation development.
His book “Strategies and Methods of Enterprise Independent Innovation” (2007, Intellectual Property Publishing House) is a systematic exposition of theories and methods of independent innovation. His articles have been published in Journal of Management, Economics of Technology, Science and Technology Management, Research Policy, Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society, Telecommunications Policy, Research Technology Management, International Journal of Technology Management, etc.
